Among the cast of Godzilla x Kong are Rebecca Hall’s Dr. Ilene Andrews, her adoptive daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle), and Bernie Hayes, played by Brian Tyree Henry. They do have a few strong moments, even if their role in the story is secondary to Kong’s quest and the fights. Though Godzilla plays a significant part, Kong’s emotional journey after returning to Hollow Earth takes center stage in The New Empire. The Skar King is insane and violent, taking great pleasure in his authority and in inciting violence. Watching the Skar King is exhilarating in a way since the Titan is nimble, violent, and unrestricted in his pursuit of his goals. Godzilla and Kong put aside their personal grudges to battle the Skar King, and they find him to be a formidable opponent.

Before the climactic confrontation, there are a lot of entertaining action scenes that are never overly dramatic. Even though there is still antagonism between Godzilla and Kong from the last movie, director Adam Wingard manages to keep the intensity up in the build-up to their team-up. The conclusion seems well-earned since the opponent is so alluring and the last battle scene is so captivating. Kong faces with the loneliness of presumably being the last of his kind at first, so it helps that he has gone through his own personal journey.

Kong and Baby Kong have a particularly lovely friendship as a result. It is adversarial at first, but it develops into something more like loyalty. Even though they had a tough beginning, I was cheering for their relationship because the incredible VFX team and authors Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater accomplished so much with so little conversation.
